Why Did My Garage Door Come Off Its Tracks?

You expect your garage door to open or close as it usually does - except that it doesn’t. Or perhaps it suddenly comes crashing down to the ground in a crooked manner. Either way, there’s a good chance your garage door has come off its tracks. The following takes a look at some of the common causes of this problem, along with a few preventive measures you can take.

Roller Malfunction

Your garage doors fitted with a series of rollers that allow it to move up and down with minimal effort. With time, however, these rollers can begin to malfunction due to years of wear and tear or a sudden defect within the rollers. These issues can cause the rollers to pop out of their track. Fortunately, this can be prevented simply by keeping up with preventive maintenance.

Track Damage

Whether you accidentally hit the garage door track with your car door or bend it out of place some other way, a damaged track can easily put your garage door at risk of coming off its tracks. It’s a good idea to call a technician to have the damaged section of track repaired properly.

Loose Hardware

The various fasteners holding your garage door hardware in place may start to work themselves loose due to the vibrations generated by your garage door’s constant movement. This can eventually lead to your garage door popping out of its tracks. Inspecting and tightening every fastener on a regular basis can help prevent this from happening.

Broken Lift Cable

A sudden lift cable failure caused by fatigue or accidental damage can easily cause the garage door to shift out of alignment, throwing the rollers off the track. To keep this from happening, you should always make sure your garage door is carefully balanced. The lift cable you’re using should also be a suitable diameter for your garage door, depending on its weight.
