The purpose of a backup battery for your garage door opener is to allow for continued use in the event that the electricity that fuels the opener becomes inaccessible. The last thing you want during a power outage is to climb on top of your car with a flashlight and teach yourself how the machine operates in order to manually open it. Can you imagine being the only family in your neighborhood who can't flee the hurricane or tornado because you can't get your car out of the garage? Power Outage Your garage door opener is currently plugged into an electrical outlet or hard-wired into your home's grid. If the breaker trips, or if your neighbor hits a power pole again, a power outage could make it impossible to open your garage door without a battery backup. Bad Weather Storms can cause power outages and they make life difficult enough without trapping you in your home. There's never a convenient time for your garage door to stop functioning, but if you're planning to leave the house in a storm, you've got enough on your mind already. And after the storm, when everyone else is cleaning up and recovering, you don't need to be trapped, waiting for the power to be restored so you can get your garage door open. Emergency Power outages and bad weather can cause their own emergencies. It's true that you can manually open the door once you've looked over the mechanisms, but emergencies are unpredictable. Can you imagine breaking the arm that does the heavy lifting, only to discover that you can't bypass the garage door opener at the time you need it the most? Many newer garage door openers come with battery backups. It might sound like a frivolous novelty, but it can be extremely valuable in an emergency. Aftermarket battery backups are also available, and can be attached to your pre-existing garage door opener, as well. For more garage door information, contact the team at Town & Country Door today!

An automatic garage door is something one takes for granted on a daily basis. However, when a garage door gets stuck, it can take away valuable time from one's day trying to fix the issue. There are a few common reasons a garage door will stick and a fix for each potential cause. The first thing to look for if your door is stuck is to check the sensors. Most automatic garage doors come with two sensors located on either side toward the bottom of the garage that will stop the door from closing in the event the event that a child or pet is in the way of the door. If your door gets stuck, the first thing to do is look at both sensors and make sure nothing is in the way. Another potential problem with the sensors is that they have fallen out of alignment. When working properly, the sensors are aligned and meet each other in the middle, if they are not in alignment the door will not move. In the event, this is the cause of your door not working you will most likely need to call in a professional. For a garage door to open and close without issue, it requires proper lubrication. If the chain or the tracks on the door lack proper lubrication, then the door will stick. To fix this, you will want to use a spray bottle with lube and apply to both parts of the door, and that should do the trick. Another common reason a door will get stuck is due to damage to the garage door track. The track can be easily damaged if hit with an object or can bend out of shaped by freezing air. If this is the case, try to hammer out a few of the dents on the track. For more severe damage, you will need a professional to come out. A garage door that won't close is definitely not the worst thing in the world, but it's certainly a nuisance. You may have a variety of things inside that you need to keep protected. Fortunately, there are ways to troubleshoot a door that's been giving you problems. 1. Start with the Transmitter This is by far the easiest fix for your stuck garage door — you may just need to replace the transmitter batteries. All you have to do is test one method to open the door against the other. For example, if the transmitter still works in your car but not on the garage panel, then you'll just need to remove the battery door and replace. It's important to note though that the batteries in the other transmitters (e.g., the remote) will likely also need to be replaced soon. 2. Check the Door Track If the door still has limited movement, then you can use a rubber mallet to manipulate the rollers and rails of the door so they are entirely lined up. You'll need to loosen the screws and watch what the rollers do as the door moves. If the door isn't moving at all though (and it's an alignment problem), then you'll likely need professional help. You can also inspect the torsion spring as it can become worn out over time. 3. Clean the Photo Eyes If the safety sensors in the garage door are dirty, they may cause the garage door to stick. Clean the photo eye as carefully as you can, and be sure not to scratch the glass. You can also use a level to ensure that the eyes are aligned. If not, they'll need to be shifted back into place. Experimentation is really the name of the game when it comes to troubleshooting. Your garage door may be stuck for something as simple as a stray pine cone or toy!
