How to Paint a Garage Door

Town And Country Garage Doors

A garage door is like just about anything else in your home - if you take care of it, it will take care of you.  One of the best things that you can do to extend the life of your garage door, other than maintain the track and pulley components, is to make sure your garage door has a good paint job.

Painting is one of those things that a lot of people think they can tackle, but those with good painting skills can point out a bad paint job from a mile away.  Not only do poorly painted garage doors stick out like a sore thumb, they can be subjected to rust, which can dramatically reduce the life expectancy of the garage door.

We recommend power washing the garage door before applying paint.  If you don’t have a power washer, you can use a hose with a pressure nozzle.  This will help to remove the dirt and dust that is likely on the door.  Paint will not properly adhere to a dirty garage door.

If there is flaking or peeling paint on the door, be sure to scrape these areas thoroughly and clean the door afterwards to remove dust.  Areas that have exposed rust should be sanded with a wire brush.  Again, remove dust after using the wire brush.

It is wise to use a primer after cleaning, scraping, and cleaning again. The primer will allow the paint to cover properly.  Some paints come with primer mixed with paint.  The reviews vary on these products, so consider purchasing primer and paint and separately to ensure lasting coverage.

Once you’re ready, coat the garage evenly with a good brush and roller. Talk with your local hardware professional about the brush and roller that is likely to work best on your garage door.

If your garage door is looking old and dated, and a paint job does not give it new life, then it is probably time for a garage door replacement.  At Town & Country Door, their friendly and trusted staff can help you select a door that will not only function like you need it to, but will also add beauty to your home’s exterior.
