How-to Prepare & Coat a Garage Floor

If you are interested in making your garage floor look brand new, it is a feasible process. However, there are certain steps that you need to follow in order to transform your garage floor.

The first thing that you should do is make sure that your garage floor is clean. First, use a broom to remove debris and dirt that are very visible to the eye. Then, you can use a rag to wipe off any major stains and spills on the floor, such as grease and oil spills. For deeper cleaning, pour a concrete and masonry cleaner and etcher into a plastic pump sprayer or watering can, and apply the product all over the concrete floor. Let it soak on the surface for about 10 to 20 minutes. Then, use a stiff-bristled non-metal broom or brush to scrub the surface as hard as you can. While it is still wet, rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water using a pressure washer or high-pressure nozzle on a garden hose. Remove excess water and let the surface dry.

In order to actually coat the floor, start by mixing the primer thoroughly and pouring it into a bucket. Use a 2"-2 ½" wide polyester or nylon brush to paint around the perimeter of your garage. Once you are done with this, pour the primer into a paint tray and coat a paint roller with the primer completely. Use the roller to paint the garage with the primer. You can repeat all of the steps that you took with the primer with the actual coating after the primer has dried completely and will not mix with the coating. Once you have coated the floor, allow the surface of your garage floor to dry completely before setting foot in there or parking your car in the garage.
