How to Winterize Your Garage Door

If you are getting those cold blasts, you need to remove and replace the weatherstripping. Make sure to remove all of the old sealant, so the new has a smooth surface to adhere to. Make sure the strip is aligned so the rubber flap flattens against the door when it is closed. If you have consistent problems, consider more expensive weather stripping. A weather seal at the bottom of the door can also be helpful, especially if you have issues with insects in your garage.
Additionally, the door itself should be insulated. This generally involves putting foam board, fiberglass, or some other insulating material in the garage door panels. If this is not enough, then you might have to consider replacing the door. Most modern garage doors come already insulated.
Finally, it is a good idea to clean and lubricate the door tracks before winter comes, especially if you have a lot of leaves blown around your garage. The middle of winter is not when you want your garage door to get stuck halfway.
